Golf Fitness Exercises for the Amateur Golfer

With all the talk about the players on tour getting stronger and more flexible, we hear a lot about exercising for golf from television commentators and read about it in the golf publications. But what exactly are the best exercises for the amateur golfer?

A great question that has a good answer, but before we give you the answer let us provide some background so the answer makes a little more sense to you. First of all, discussing the golf swing for the time being will get us rolling.

What exactly is the golf swing? The golf swing is an athletic movement that requires using of the entire body from feet to fingertips in order to complete the swing. Realize that the golf swing is not about the club, not just about your grip, or where your head is during the swing. The golf swing is a movement that requires your entire body to move through a sequence of movements with the correct timing. To perform the athletic movement of the golf swing requires the body to begin at address, move through the actual phases of the golf swing and complete it with the follow through. In order to perform this activity with efficiency and repetitively, the body must have certain physical parameters.

These parameters, as I call them, are actual physical categories of the body that need to be developed to a certain level. These categories of the body are the platform from which the body is able to perform the athletic movement of a golf swing efficiently. The categories are probably familiar to many of you, but for the purpose of this article let us briefly run through them.

The body is required to have certain levels of flexibility, balance, endurance, strength, and power to complete a golf swing. If the body lacks in any of the above categories, then the results will be seen in the golf swing. The results are usually in the form of poor mechanics, bad shots, or poor scores on the course. So, now that we know what the connection is between the body and the swing let us address the question about the best exercises for golf.

The best Exercises for golf

Lets say you walk into your local health club and see all the fancy machines and aerobic machines at the facility to get you shape. What ones would choose? Would you choose running on the treadmill for 30 minutes, or would it be better to push out a couple sets of bench presses? Well, the answer to our question really lies within the connection between your swing and your body.

I will tell you that exercises meant to pump you up! or give you that six pack are not necessarily the correct exercises for your golf game. Neither is that weight training program you used back in high school. So, with those thoughts in mind what do you think the best exercises for golf are?

Right now we know, in general terms about the golf swing, what is required of the body for the golf swing and what exercises are not good for the swing. Armed with that knowledge we can decipher what the best exercises for golf are for you.

Beginning with flexibility, we know that the entire body must move through certain ranges of motion to perform an effective golf swing. And what happens if your body is not able to move through the required ranges of motion of the golf swing? The answer: the golf swing will mechanically suffer resulting in shots that are less than optimal. So part of the exercises that are good for golfers are flexibility exercises and, even more so, flexibility exercises that work the muscles used in the golf swing through the movements involved in the golf swing. So first and foremost flexibility exercises should be on the top of your list.

The second category of exercises that would be conducive to the golf swing would have to do with balance. We hear about balance in reference to the golf swing all the time. Stay balanced through the swing; transfer your weight to maintain balance during the swing But what does balance exactly mean? Balance is the ability to control your body through a specific movement pattern. The movement pattern we are discussing just happens to be the golf swing. We know the importance of balance in relation to the golf swing, so how do we train our body for better balance in the golf swing? Before we answer that question we need to know a little more about balance. Balance in relation to the body has to do with the connection between your nerves and muscles. Essentially your nervous system, as a result of messages sent from your brain, tells your muscles how to move to maintain the bodys balance. The more efficient your nerves and muscles are to these messages the greater balance abilities the body develops. So balance exercises train both the nervous system and muscular system to become more efficient at this function. Summing it all up, balance is the second category of exercises that will assist your golf game.

The third category of exercises that are beneficial to golf have to do with your muscles. The golf swing requires the muscles of your body to move through a specific range of motion (flexibility) and help with your balance capacities. In order to perform these actions and others, your body needs certain levels of strength and endurance. The definition of strength is the ability of the muscles to exert force for the given athletic action (simplified definition but a good working definition for us). Endurance is the ability of your muscles to do the same activity over and over again for a specific amount of time.

First off, let us discuss strength. The golf swing has one intention of developing club head speed while maintaining balance through the swing. The muscles in your body must have enough strength in them to do both. Now, when we discuss building strength for the golf swing it is NOT the type of strength needed to bench press 250 lbs. Or squat 500! It is strength geared towards the improvement of your swing. I refer to this type of strength as golf strength. So when you get to the gym, performing strength exercises like bench press will not help your swing. Exercises that train the body in the positions and through the movements of the golf swing will help your swing.

In addition to strength, we need to develop endurance in your muscles. Think of how many swings you may take over the course of 18 holes. In order for you to be able to swing the club the same way on the 18th hole as you did on the 1st hole. Your body has to have high levels of endurance. This will allow your body to perform the golf swing without getting tired. You develop endurance similar to how you develop golf strength. Utilize exercises that train the body in the positions and through the movements of the golf swing. Lighter loads with higher repetitions will be used for these exercises. The end result will be the development of golf endurance.

The final segment of exercises beneficial to your golf swing is power training. Power training is geared towards the ability of your body to generate high levels of club head speed. Power development by the body is what allows for greater distance on your shots. Clubs help, golf balls help, but it really comes down to the piece of machinery, your body, swinging those club and hitting those golf balls. Development of power for the golf swing is very similar to the development of golf strength and endurance. It is the utilization of exercises that place your body in the positions and move you through movements similar to the golf swing.

Summary

So there you have it, the answer to the types of exercises best for the improvement of your golf swing. I think you now realize it is not one exercise, but a group of exercises that incorporate flexibility, balance, endurance, strength, and power. A combination of these exercises is what will enhance your golf swing.

Stop the Silence - Sean Patrick's Fight Against Ovarian Cancer

The first message that she was dying came by bicycle. Sean Patrick rode up the steep trail on Smuggler Mountain, Aspen, Colorado, on a cool, pre-fall day in 1995. She had spent many summer afternoons biking through the Aspen groves, enjoying the late sun shining patchwork on the trail. Normally energized from the strenuous workout and her daily 15- to 22-mile rides, Patrick was shocked when she became so out of breath that she had to get off the bike to avoid throwing up.

It was radical, she says. I couldnt get up. At first she thought she had over trained or suffered from exhaustion from too much traveling. Confirming her ideas, Patricks doctor suggested that she slow down and get a hobby. If you cant slow down, he said to her, I can always give you a prescription for Valium.

After weeks of still not being able to ride or rock climbher favorite sportPatrick returned to her doctor, who did blood work, but found nothing obviously wrong. He told her not to worry. It wasnt until 1997 that she finally found out that she had a rare form of ovarian cancer called Micropapillary Serous Carcinoma. After the late discovery, Patrick endured seven surgeries and, at one point in 2001 after being flown to a hospital via flight for life, doctors told her she wouldnt live past six weeks.

------------------------------------------------------

Patrick did live, and she says, in large part it was due to her experiences in the mountains. She was strong from regularly biking and lifting weights, and she was mentally balanced after decades of rock climbing. The wilderness and leadership skills she gleaned in places like the Rocky Mountains prepared her for the greatest challenge of her lifesurviving that six-week ordeal in the hospital.

While on her deathbed in the ICU, a doctor inserted a blood gas line in her body, and it hurt like hell, she says. I snapped and got angry, and at that moment I came back into my body. She likens the feeling to being really scared after a rock climbing fall or when she has been stuck on the side of a mountain on a ledge in a thunderstorm. I would get scared and then angry, and that would act as a catalyst to get moving. I knew if I did not keep moving in the face of my disease that I would not make it.

Since her extraordinary recovery six years ago, Patrick continues to move rapidly forward. Not only does she still climb and play in the mountainsshe topped out on the Grand Teton after 22 hours of climbing through blizzard conditions in 2004but she also decided to make it her mission to raise awareness and money for the cancer that almost killed her. My lifes goal is to prevent as many women as possible from going through what I experienced, she says.

In the last few years Patrick has helped create an ovarian cancer website for the Johns Hopkins Medical institute, and she regularly travels around the country on speaking engagements. Patricks crowning achievement is the non-profit HERA Foundation (Health, Empowerment, research, Advocacy), which she created in 2002. She organizes Climb For Life events around the country and in Mexico, which bring women and men together to rock climb, do yoga, watch climbing slide shows and films, and, most importantly, learn about and raise money for ovarian cancer.

Friend and Climb for Life volunteer, Deanne Pranke says that Patricks climbing events have been incredibly inspirational for thousands of people. Sean has brought ovarian cancer out in the open and empowered many women such as myself to take charge of our health and educate our loved ones and friends about this kind of cancer.

Adds Patrick, The need for perseverance forces women to reach deep inside themselves when they feel like they cant go further. The lessons you learn from climbing and taking care of yourself in the wilderness translate into successful life strategies on a day to day basis. In fact, Patrick has never seen a sport as empowering as climbing is for women. Often when Ive seen women get to the top of a route in the gym, the transformation on their face is phenomenal, she explains.

------------------------------------------------------

Sean Patricks wide smile greets the climbers as they stream into the third-floor room of REI Denver, spring 2004. Running her hand through a shock of white blonde hair, she says shes nervous when speaking publicly, but her voice is steady and vibrant as she talks about ovarian cancer and the HERA Climb for Life REI Road tour (now in its third year), sponsored by REI, Black Diamond, and HERA. She speaks to the audience with the fluency of someone who possesses a vast knowledge of the disease and the politics surrounding it.

After her diagnosis, Patrick became a research maven, reading everything she could find on the subject and hounding doctors all over the country. With her energetic and insistent attitude, shes penetrated the wall of scientific jargon to understand her disease. What she learned inspired her to reach out to others.

Since its inception, she says, the foundation has provided doctors with research grants; provided seed grants to a number of small communities, which have allowed them to offer immediate assistance to aid patients with travel, hotel rooms, and childcare while they are undergoing treatment; and established awareness programs throughout the United States.

Patrick has also convinced thousands of women and men to work with her. Among those women are famous alpinist Kitty Calhoun and salt Lake City, Utah, resident Hillary Silberman. Both women worked with Patrick to create a video highlighting the HERA Foundation and ovarian cancer.

According to Silberman, making the video and volunteering for HERA changed her life. Silbermans mother died in 2003 from ovarian cancer, and she says that she felt helpless in the face of her mothers illness. My involvement with HERA gave me the tools to work with to deal with my mothers death as well as people to connect with who understand where Im coming from.

By being involved and being proactive, Silberman explains, she has done something positive for others by presenting them with information. I have also done something positive for myself by beginning to think about what I needed to do to protect myself and get early detection.

With cancer affecting most of the female members of her family, Silberman is at a high risk for contracting the disease, although she doesnt currently have it. Her nurse practitioner tried to convince her not to worry, but Patrick and the Climb for Life events convinced Silberman to follow through on her own to seek the medical services she needs for early detection. The feeling of strength, perseverance and tenaciousness that climbing engenders made me not give up when professionals were telling me not to worry.

------------------------------------------------------

As with most female-specific diseases, says Patrick, ovarian cancer has typically been ignored by the medical industry. Despite the fact that it kills women of all ages and more women than all the other gynecological cancers combined, many doctors are ignorant of its symptoms and think the disease affects only the elderly. This, explains Patrick, partially results from the medical fields traditional focus on men and male-specific diseases.

For example, the Agency for Healthcare research and Quality found that although coronary heart disease (CHD) causes more than 250,000 deaths in women each year, much of the research in the last 20 years on CHD has either excluded women entirely or included only limited numbers of women.

Additionally, doctors treat women different than men in hospitals. According to a fall 2001 study published in the journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics, womens pain reports are taken less seriously than mens, and women receive less aggressive treatment than men for their pain. Also, women were more likely to have their pain reports discounted as emotional and therefore, not real.

I have had several experiences with this kind of dismissive treatment by both male and female doctors, says Patrick. It is a flaw in how medicine is taughtwomen complain, men dont, so they take mens complaints more seriously. To get the best treatment, you have to find a doctormale or female (one is not better than another in being more empathetic)that sees you as a person and not a statistical group.

Although Patrick seeks to change the way doctors view ovarian cancer and other women-specific diseases, she believes its more imperative to encourage women to take control of their own health. Ovarian cancer is not a silent killer, she says, the disease has symptoms, and its important that women are made aware of what they are. women who go to the doctor with gastrointestinal symptoms must make sure that ovarian cancer is ruled out.

Through climbing, Patrick believes that women can be taught to stand up for themselves. Not only do these events teach women self-reliance, but they are also places where we can turn our passion for climbing into a passion for making a difference.

I think success in climbing no matter what level you climb at5.4 to 5.14translates to successful life strategies, Patrick says. I want women who are empowered by the mountains to take this back into everyday life, and as it relates to the medical community, I want them to trust their intuition despite their doctors contention that they may not have a problem. In climbing and in life, trust yourself.

Mudras & Hand Symbolism: Hand Mysteries? Part 3

[Note: This paper contains images which may be seen as originally published at our website]

In ceremonial magick of the Western Tradition, the hands and fingers are used for various purposes among which is to trace symbols, sigils, and signs in a consecrated space or object. They are also utilized to banish, invoke and direct forces to certain targets. In contrast to the adepts of ceremonial magic, stage magicians apply the hands to entertain audiences with their many illusory tricks. They call this, "prestidigitation," or "sleight of hand." In prestidigitation, the hands are used in various ways to deceive and mislead the eyes, and also in guiding the mental focus of the audience. The saying that "the hands are quicker than the eye," is a well-known clich used by stage magicians.

While still on the topic of entertainment, we have to consider the applause. The clapping of hands in modern usage is an expression of delight, agreement, an accompaniment to music, or appreciation for someone's stage performance. Metaphysically, it is said that ovation dispels the presence of angelic beings. These creatures of light dislike the vibrations produced by the applause. From the occult point of view, therefore, clapping is regarded as a negative practice.

In dance, gestures of the hands are essential in conveying or expressing symbolic messages and metaphorical meanings. They possess a rich vocabulary and tell non-verbal stories that evoke our primordial emotions as well as divine sensations. This can easily be seen and experienced in the hula-dance of the Polynesians. These dances and hand movements narrate various myths of the land that transports us to another world. In Hindu classical texts regarding dance, hundreds of hand gestures are mentioned, together with descriptions of the thirteen positions of the head, thirty-six of the eyes, and nine of the neck. In the Hindu dances based on the Carnatic music composition, the following mudras are used among many others: Raaga mudra, Tata mudra, Aachaarya mudra, Naayaka mudra, Vamsa mudra, Biruda mudra, Lakshana Grantha mudra, Prabandha mudra, Sthala mudra, etc.

Although the many poses of the hands in traditional dance may portray symbolical meanings, they are also functional in the sense that they modify the morphogenic or auric field of the human organism, and likewise meant to regulate the energy flow within the etheric body.

There are numerous forms of dance or dancing style prompted by the various levels of the psyche. Basically, we can classify three types of dance originating from the subconsciousness, consciousness and the superconsciousness. The instinctive or primitive dance originating from the subconsciousness is well known and is displayed by both man and beast. Most of these movements and their awkward gestures usually are mating courtship dances and the release of pent-up energies. Cultural dances evolved from these unrefined movements. They are a projection of what the psyche understands of beauty, grace, form, rhythm, etc. The third category may be called mystical dances. They originate from higher levels of consciousness beyond the reach of the conscious mind, but whose energies may be channeled through the physical body producing divine movements. Some forms of dancing are the amalgamation of all three classifications. The traditional dancing styles of Eastern countries such as India, Thailand, and Indonesia are typical of these. In these dances mudras are often formed to alter the consciousness of the dancer and indirectly affect the consciousness of the spectators. About 16 years ago the writer personally witnessed one of the traditional Javanese dances performed by a very talented young man. The dance was called "Kesadaran," or "Consciousness." We were spellbound from start to finish.

music often make us move and sway our hands, feet, and body unconsciously. Why does it do this? For the simply reason that musical energies have the power to possess our beings and cause an altered state of awareness making us lose a certain degree of control over our physical motor system. All beings are susceptible to the influence of music. Animals and plants are especially vulnerable. In Greek myth we often hear tales of Pan, the personification of Nature, dancing to the mystical tunes of his pan-pipes, and all those who heard him play would also join in the fun, the mirth, and the merry-making. Similarly, when the Greek sage Orpheus played on his lyre, all became entranced, even the rocks listened attentively.

In the Hindu tales of the gods, as found in the Bhagavata-Purana and the Gita-Govinda, Krishna is said to have enchanted the gopis, or shepherdesses of Vrindavana with his lila dance and magical flute-playing. Each gopi was so mesmerized and distracted by Krishna that they would forget everything else around them. They would become so one-pointed that they would believe that they were the only one present before their Lord. Evidently, music has the power to cause ecstatic feelings.

The god Shiva is often portrayed in iconography in a dancing pose as Nataraja, or "Lord of Dance." Representing the Consciousness aspect of Nature, why does Shiva engage in a Cosmic dance? It is because Shakti or divine energy, flows through his being and causes spasms and convulsions at first, and then rhythmic movements in attunement with the beat of the Cosmos. Amidst spiritual flames, Shiva dances rapturously, burning and transmuting all of the old outworn forms of life hindering cosmic progress.

In a microcosmic scale, a Shiva-dance likewise occurs to a practitioner of mudras. Spontaneous dancing may transpire as a result of the awakening of the life-force in the lowest psychospiritual center of the etheric body. While conducting the mudras the practitioner's whole being would often move involuntarily. The physical body might sway forward and backward, left and right or rotate on its axis. His or her hands would move on their own accord in circles, in arches, in figure-eights, in a chopping upward-downward movement, or oscillate in a left-right or forward-backward direction; sometimes the hands are mysteriously placed at various layers of the aura, or even at certain focus points--at the chakras or energy centers of the body. While Shakti is active, she may also induce the practitioner to assume unlearnt mudras. The energies invoked through mudras have an intelligence all of their own and they do their work through movements. They know what to do to balance, purify, transform, or integrate celestial energies into the microcosmic system.

In the martial-arts field, hands are used as weapons of defense or destruction. The "Tiger's Claw," the "Iron Fist," "the Drunken-style Fist," etc, all indicate the manifold lethal forms that the hands may assume to strike an opponent or to ward off blows. In contrast to this, the finer arts make use of the hands constructively and creatively to produce wondrous objects of art, and to compose and produce heavenly music. Like the Cosmic dance of Shiva, the movements of tai Chi, Pencak Silat, and other forms of self-defense have part of their origin in an awakened source of energy moving through the limbs producing involuntary movements. These movements were later noted down and turned into the various steps of martial-art discipline and training.

Some systems of metaphysical development teach us to move the body in a certain way. Though this has an effect in stimulating energies in the body it is not quite as effective in producing the desired results as when compared to the assuming of mudras that cause the energies to produce natural movements all of their own accord.

When we clasp our hands by interlacing our fingers, the thumb at the uppermost, whether right or left indicates which hemisphere of our brain predominates. Psychology tells us that if the right thumb is uppermost it is logic or reason that is predominant within us, or if the left thumb, intuition.

The hands play an important role in empowering the mind to function optimally. Since energy radiates from the palms and fingertips, they are often unconsciously utilized as stimulators re-connecting lost or poor links between synapses of brain neurons. In the book body Magic, an important work on esoteric man, Benjamin Walker describes how the operations of the hands often attempt to improve the mental processes by certain placements:

"When the fingertips of the two hands are placed together, a circuit is set up with the brain that is believed to assist thought. People in deep thought will often talk with their fingertips pressed together, as if unconsciously aware of the need to establish such a current to assist their concentration. If a man wishes to recall something he has forgotten, his hand will instinctively touch his forehead to contact with his fingers the source of his thinking."

From what has been written thus far, it is evident that hands play a prominent role in everyday life. This can also be seen in the way we have invented all sorts of idioms regarding them. For instance, "lend me a hand," "hands-off," "hand-in-hand," "old-hand," "hands-on," etc.

The Application of Hands in the spiritual Path

In the spiritual Path hands are used for the following purposes:

As an instrument of healing.

As an instrument of blessing and consecration.

As an instrument of general service.

As an instrument of teaching.

As an instrument of purification, invocation, prayer, and communion.

**********

As an instrument of healing

Chakras, or energy-centers are to be found all over the body. There is a chakra to be found in each palm of the hand. There is likewise a minor chakra at every fingertip. The size, activity, and power of these chakras are dependent upon various factors. One of these is the purity of the subtle channels terminating at those chakra points. These subtle channels or etheric nadis convey the life-force all over the body and may be projected outside of the body through the hand chakras. Healers of various metaphysical traditions make use of the hands to convey healing energy or to break up toxic crystals imbedded in the tissues. Since ancient times Chinese doctors have been diagnosing a person's state of vitality through sensing the strength of the energy radiating from the hands, from the phalanges of the fingers, and the pulse at the wrist. Among the many systems of alternative therapeutics that make use of the hands are acupressure, Shiatsu, Chakra healing, Reiki, Rosicrucian Contact healing, body Electronics, various forms of massage work, etc. Like Jesus the Christ, every Initiate on the spiritual Path is essentially a healer, though he may not blatantly proclaim or advertise himself to be one. When circumstances and necessity calls for it he would gladly offer his services to the suffering one, always stressing, however, that it is not he that works, but the "Father " within him.

As an instrument of blessing and consecration

Metaphysics teaches and proves through various experiments which may be personally verified by skeptics that energy radiates from the hands. This energy may be used to magnetize objects, places, spaces or people for various purposes. The religious term for magnetization is consecration. Blessing is a form of consecration. It refers to the magnetization of a human being rather than an object with a spiritual force. Generally, in the act of consecration or blessing we seek to raise the vibrations or frequency of a person or an object, or to empower it with certain energies that would turn it into a psycho-spiritual generator that would influence its immediate surroundings in a certain way. Thought-forms imbued with mental suggestions and emotional power are often attached to these blessings. Curses operate much in the same way as blessings, they however, bring about negative effects. The curse on Tutankhamen's tomb is a classic example of this.

Where people are concern in the act of blessing, the metaphysical practitioner would also seek to clear obstructive or congested energies preventing the person from being aware of or communing with his or her Higher Self. Once this purification is achieved the person would possess a clearer line of communication with his hidden god or genius and acquire a stronger sense of protection, faith, and a constant guidance from the Most High.

In the act of blessing or consecration, the hands work in harmony with the power of the spoken word to modify the magnetic-field structure of people and objects.

As an instrument of general service

The hands are tools of service and humanitarian aid. Spiritually and socially, it is applied in extending a helping hand to our fellow beings, to those in need of bare necessities, comfort and solace. In spiritual teachings, karma yoga is often associated with the hands in active giving without any thought of remuneration or recognition. This is a vital principle. The desire to serve humanity must come from the heart without any thought of self or ego. Selflessness, self-sacrifice, and active service are important virtues that the spiritual aspirant has to embody and express at every breathing moment. When self-comfort, self-importance, and self-aggrandizement are the sole motives of help to others then the hands are misapplied and any act carried-out is unmeritorious. spiritual disciples should not attract attention to the fact that they are serving. The best service is done quietly in the shadows without any fanfare or advertisements. The Master Jesus explained it concisely in this manner: "Do not let the left hand know what the right hand is doing." Occultly, the left hand is used for receiving energies, while the right hand is employed for giving them.

As an instrument of teaching

spiritual Gurus teach in various ways. They give teachings orally, in writing, telepathically, through example, symbols, drama, and by the use of gestures. The hands can convey lots of information when knowledgeably used. Symbolic movements of the hands may portray the workings of Cosmic laws and spiritual principles. It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Sometimes the hands may tell what the mouth cannot. A loving touch tells something that words are often unequipped to. In Zen Buddhism, the Guru often gives shock treatments to his students with the use of the hands. A rap on the head or a slap on the face at the appropriate moment and psychological condition after intense meditation is supposed to cause a student to suddenly apperceive the natural state of his mind and thereby become enlighten.

As an instrument of purification, invocation, prayer and communion

Perhaps the most common use of hands in religious and in metaphysical spiritual work is its application in prayer. Basically, this does not require any specialized knowledge. The hands are instinctively used when appealing to God, to higher intelligences for intercession or when used simply as gestures of adoration or reverence, just as we instinctively scratch our foreheads or pull our beards when we seek to arouse our mental powers. The hands may be clasped, outstretched or assumed in any other way that the heart dictates while in silent prayer. Esoteric teachings, however, teaches various mudras, or hand gestures that have specific purposes for the invocation of cosmic forces and spiritual beings. The liturgical formula "The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Amen" in the Christian Tradition accompanied with the touching of the appropriate points of the head and body at the conclusion of a prayer conveys a certain power to the etheric body when correctly done. However, the perfunctory manner in which it is performed provides very little of worth. In Hinduism, such placing of the hands upon certain parts of the body with magical intent is called Nyasa.

To commune with the divinity within us we may apply various mudras that facilitates mystical communion. Mudras establishes a psychic condition in the mind and body that temporary elevates our consciousness, and disperses the etheric webs that protects the psyche from being prematurely bombarded by psychic/celestial energies. It aligns and unites our objective consciousness with the superconscious mind. An altered state of consciousness is easily achieved through the use of the hands in the performing of mudras. Through mudras our communion with the so-called supernatural is controlled. We open and close the portals to higher worlds through the application of our will.

In ceremonial magick the hands are extensively used to direct and build up forces in one's sacred place of worship and practice. Symbols are drawn on the ground or in the air with the power radiating from the hands and chakras to invoke and evoke cosmic metaphysical forces. The avatar Sai Baba is often seen making gestures in the air. He does this for the purpose of dispersing and cleansing the ambient surroundings and atmosphere from negative energies. The metaphysical practitioner or ceremonial magician makes use of the hands in manifesting certain things and conditions.

To conclude this article we would like to praise the hands for what they offer us--the opportunity to grow and serve. The fingers and thumbs of the hands should not quarrel among themselves as to who is the greatest, as related in some ancient fables, for they all have their place in supporting the need in us to further pursue our dreams, in fulfilling our earthly tasks and cosmic mission. The harmonious conjoined functioning of the fingers and thumbs of the hands is a metaphor for the right relationship and cooperation between the sons of men to manifest the Will of God, just as the fingers and hands manifests the will of its possessor. The noblest use of our hands is to extend it in friendship, in kindness and in unconditional love.

The Number 1 Way For Obese People To Lose The Fat

The number one way for obese people to lose fat is the exact same for those that are only 20 pounds overweight. strength training is the best way to cut through fat and burn through calories. There's no difference between strength training for the obese and strength training for everyone else.

When we strength train, we add lean muscle mass to our body. This lean muscle mass burns through 35-50 calories per pound of muscle every single day. Let's take a look at that number from a different point of view. If we have 5 pounds of lean muscle, that muscle will burn about 250 calories a day. Here comes the fun part. If we have 10 pounds of lean muscle mass, then our muscles burn about 500 calories a day. Hopefully you can see why adding lean muscle is the best way to lose fat.

The centers for disease control and Prevention state that we are obese if we have a BMI (body mass index) of 30.0 or greater. Being obese is not healthy. It leads to a host of diseases and illnesses. I'm almost positive you already knew that.

obese and over weight people can use functional exercises to begin changing their health. exercises like squats and bicep curls will help strengthen the muscles we use in everyday movements. Often these movements are difficult for obese people. Keep up your workout routine and you'll notice that getting in and out of the car, walking to the mailbox, going upstairs and simply lifting heavy boxes will all become less of a hassle.

strength training for the obese is the same as strength training for slender people. The difference comes in the starting point. It's so important to talk with your doctor, get the go ahead to workout, and then create a routine that you feel suits you best. take one step at a time and before you know it, you will have taken 5,000 steps.

Working From The Heart

There are two forces at work in your life: Fear, and Love. There are two places that give you messages, the mind and the Heart, and sometimes they give you conflicting and opposing information. Your mind, many times gives you wrong or distorted information. Your heart on the other hand, is connected to the truth. To access your heart takes patience, trust, silence, and calm. Your mind is a place of agitation and unrest. If you trust the mind, it will lie to you all the time, and you will be spun this way and that way and you will feel pressured, pained and guilty. If you learn to trust that inward spirit in the heart, you will feel collected, peaceful, calm, joyful and incredibly loved, and you will know what to do in all situations.

To access your heart, first you have to stop responding to your mind. You have to shut her down. Just observe your thoughts and watch them all go by; do not engage or connect to any thought. Next, you must shut down any feeling of guilt or any impatient thought. Next you have to go to a private place and you have to get very quiet. Turn off the radio, television, your phone, the beeper, pager, computer, etc. You have to remove yourself momentarily from your friends, and from the world, as you know it.

Then sit very still and very quiet in a comfortable position, so that your back, legs or arms do not get tired. Close your eyes. Suspend yourself in the darkness and the silence that you have created. Began to breathe slowly and imagine that this breath is going right down into your heart. The breath is accompanied by an even bright light. As you breathe this breath, and this light moves right along into your heart. With each breath you get more calm and quiet until you are very still and very calm. Then wait, and listen. Breathe in this light, wait and listen. This is the beginning of a heart mediation.

When you are very quiet, you will begin to feel a light presence filling your chest and coming into your mind. This is the spirit of Light. Acknowledge her, and allow her to encompass the space. Just relax. This is not an evil spirit, or anything like that. This is the all- knowing part of you. This is the part of you that is extremely ancient and has unlimited wisdom. And you are now accessing it. Now you can begin to ask some questions. The spirit of Light knows everything. There is nothing that this all- knowing part of you does not know. The question and answer period goes something like this: Is this the right thing for me? The answer will come in different ways. It might be an audible yes or no. It might be a physical feeling, like a tightness in your chest, or in your stomach. That is an uncomfortable answer. Which means that something about what you are asking is making you physically uncomfortable. You could say that it is a no answer. These physically feelings are directly related to you and how you specifically receive information.

If you have met a person and you receive this physical feeling of a clamping of your chest or stomach, or the feeling of nausea, do not ignore this strong physical feeling. This is warning for you about this particular person. If you receive this same feeling every single time that you encounter this person, this is a clear indication that this is not a person that you should spend time with, or one that you should give any energy at all to. Most definitely you would do well to avoid contact with this person. The same thing is true if you feel this clamping of the chest or stomach when in contact with a certain group. If upon the very first encounter with this person or group you feel this, know that something is very wrong. Trust that. Prior to getting into any relationship with this person or this group, check in with your spirit. It has already put out a warning about that.

Now. The spirit of the Light has not had your attention very often before so it gives you information, and then it will see if you will act upon that information or if you will ignore it as you used to do. The more that you listen and respond to the information, the more it will come back and guide. If, on the other hand, The spirit of Light gives you information, and each time, you say, I dont believe that, that is bull_ _ _ _, or that is my own imagination, remember that imagination is always related to your mind and your mind causes agitation and unrest. If you keep writing off the wisdom as your imagination, then the spirit of Light will not come without a lot of work and patience. Every time that you access her deep wisdom and she offers you guidance and you follow, you will become more adept at listening, more adept at the communication, and more adept at receiving the information and the reward. She will show you how to get anything that you desire.

Remember that imagination can also be a tool. You can receive brilliant book ideas, song titles, plays, great inventions that can make you rich. But the key is following the prompting. If it feels good, and it makes you joyful, it is a good leading. It is your choice to listen to these good feelings, these super ideas, and use the spirit within to guide you.

If when you asked your original question, Is this right thing for me? You receive this a peaceful, joyful feeling which seems to fill you inside your chest, or throughout your heart, or anywhere physically, this is a comfortable physical feeling, this would be a yes response to that question. The key then is to trust that feeling, and say yes to it and move ahead with what you were asking about. Do not doubt your answer now. It is a clear answer to move ahead. The same thing if you meet someone, and there is just such a good feeling inside you. Its another way of saying that you are getting a very good vibe about that person. Trust that.

If for some reason you dont follow that negative guidance about someone or something, something will happen with that person or thing in almost the first encounter. You will clearly see behavior that you will find repulsive, disgusting, weird, disturbing, gross etc. That is the second sign and warning that this is not the person for you, and you will get seriously hurt if you engage further with this person, group or thing. Now if you choose to continue it is with open eyes, knowing that this person is about to cause you serious harm. If you continue you do so at your own risk. Do you understand? We see it, but we just choose to ignore it, because we want it to be something that it is not. We dont want to see it for what it is because we are lonely, needy, or weak. If you think or feel about past mistakes, Im pretty sure you will know that you saw several warning signs or you felt several bad physical feelings and you chose to ignore them. If you ignore these feelings too many times, you will remain broke, hurting, have feelings of inferiority, and be filled with self-loathing. If you start to listen and spend time with the Spirit of Light, she will heal you, correct mistakes, take you away from dangerous people and situations, lead you, and show you how to build wealth, get out of debt and live debt free, and live with joy. You will enjoy more of life than you ever did before. You will feel great peace all the time. You will live your life on a super conscious level. It is your choice. And baby, you do have a choice whether you believe it or not.

Other ways that you may receive information are visually, with pictures, or images, or audibly; you might hear something. To receive something visually happens in a couple of different ways. You might actually see a vision that involves you or what you have been asking about. You might see a future event, and know that it is the right thing for you, or you might see a collage of images. These are like puzzle pieces.

When you are receiving any information, it is helpful to write down what is being given to you in a notebook or a journal so that you can go back over everything once you have received the information.

In the puzzle pieces you might see something that you do not understand, but write down the image as best as you can. Then you ask the Spirit of Light its meaning. Now you see another puzzle piece come as an answer. You write this down, too, without any judgment. You might say to the Spirit of Light, I dont understand the meaning of this but I accept that the answer is coming when it is supposed to. Then another piece comes for you and still you dont understand it, but you are writing them all down. Very soon with each page and with each image that you have recorded, you will have the whole complete concept of what you have received.

With each idea or image you have to ask yourself if there is any special meaning to you. For example, lets say that your images were a picture of a lit torch, and a jeweled box, and hands, and you touching these people.

You have to ask yourself if the torch gave you any impression. Do you feel anything when you bring the image to mind? Does it have any special meaning to you? Was it significant in any way? You might get an impression inside you, such as guidance, or light, which might mean something to you. Write down these confirmations or answers. Somewhere in your heart, you may know that this feels right even though you dont fully understand it. The concept is becoming clearer. Do this with all the other images until you start to get clear confirmations that you are on the right path.

It is also helpful to put the notebook down for a few days so that you can come back and look at it fresh. Believe me, the answers are there. You have a lot of clues now. Just work your way through it. Besides asking yourself these questions, you have to listen with your whole heart. You have to expect that the absolute right answer is coming for you. If you need the answer quickly, start saying, I receive the correct information quickly.

You also have to be aware of answers coming from time to time in other forms, and know without a doubt that the answers are meaningful for you. You might hear a song, you might see a magazine, you might hear a voice clearly speak to you, you might be led somewhere like a magnet and choose just the right book from the bookstore shelf; someone could speak to you with an answer that you understand but they do not. Feelings, impressions, and dreams all become important. You have clues coming in all the time. Your work is in deciphering these. With the help of the Spirit within, and ancient wisdom that we all have as part of us, you will be led.

There have been many times that I have heard new lines for a play, or a story for a movie, line after line after line. I try to write down at least an outline of what has been given to me, and fill in the play or movie story later. I have heard whole dialogues in my head and the tone that they need to be said in. I have heard the title, and seen which actors will play it with success. Because I enjoy writing I keep a dialogue book and write down what I hear. I dont have a character yet, but I just write down the dialogue or the story ideas.

Whatever youre into, you will receive a bundle of fresh ideas about how to do something with more ease or efficiency, or how to make it successful. Success comes in the listening and acting upon what you have been given. Trust the process, trust the guidance.

Walking with the Spirit of the Light is like walking with a very funny, loving, bright friend all the time. I do suggest that you dont try to analyze your journal or all the thoughts and feelings with a friend or your family because they may respond with negative comments, with discouragement, or with jealousy. You have this friend on the inside that offers you complete trustworthy information, guidance, and unconditional love without judgment, and will never think that you are crazy.
